OUR STORY

In response to man-made and natural disasters around the world, Global Flight Relief was established in 2011 in order to provide an integrated aviation organization dedicated to disaster relief, humanitarian aid and emergency response.

Twenty years in the making, Global Flight Relief is the vision of Scott Terry. During his 22 years of experience in government and corporate aviation, Terry witnessed firsthand the atrocities visited on communities during political unrest beginning with the mass migration and slaughter of Iraqi Kurds in Northern Iraq and Southern Turkey in 1991. Three years later, the Rwandan Genocide left more than 1 million people dead. In 1996, Terry was responsible for coordinating the first airdrops into Kosovo for Bosnian refugees. These events—coupled with the devastating natural disasters of recent earthquakes, famines, hurricanes and tsunamis—left a lasting impression and inspired him to create a nonprofit company dedicated to providing aviation assistance.
Global Flight Relief is committed to making a difference in communities around the world.
During the last few years, the following philanthropic missions have been underwritten to provide assistance to those in need:
  • Contributed more than $500,000 in airlift support to transport philanthropic donors from the USA to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in order to see firsthand the workings of the Eastern Congo Initiative, an organization that works to implement grants, grass roots job training and advocacy programs for victims of the ongoing conflict in the DRC

  • Donated more than $200,000 in airlift support to transport medical and disaster relief supplies to the earthquake victims of Haiti in 2010

  • Conducted over 35 medical evacuation flights in austere conditions from remote villages in the Eastern Congo in order to deliver patients requiring medically necessary surgery to HEAL Africa medical facilities in Goma, DRC

  • Provided more than $1 million in airlift support services, in conjunction with other NGOs, to deliver food, medical supplies and other necessities to remote villages in South Sudan, DRC, and other war-ravaged areas in the Eastern Congo

  • Transported a team of surgeons from the World Pediatric Project to St. Vincent/Grenadines to treat 59 scoliosis patients and perform 11 life-changing surgeries

  • Funded a benefit concert in 2011—featuring some of the world's most successful and legendary artists—to raise money to fund educational initiatives for local disadvantaged youth, children of deceased veterans and victims of war crimes in the Eastern Congo

  • Endowed a $25,000 grant for the purpose of combating childhood obesity in low-income area of South Carolina

As we turn towards the future...
Global Flight Relief has resolved to provide a mobile hospital to serve remote areas of the world without access to healthcare. Through a generous grant from Operation Blessing International, a Lockheed L-1011—formerly known as The Flying Hospital—has been given to our organization. This reconfigured wide-body airplane contains four operating rooms, 16 pre and post operating beds, a working pharmacy, classrooms and more. During its illustrious past, The Flying Hospital was the site for thousands of surgeries to fix cleft palates and other medically necessary surgeries. Global Flight Relief is excited to undertake the huge challenge of returning this aviation legend to the skies in order to help new generations.
